Our Flex MBA Curriculum is designed for professionals looking to fuel their career in a convenient and flexible manner 

The Lehigh Flex MBA is the culmination of the experiences of our faculty and their commitment to maintain excellence and relevance in graduate business education. The Lehigh Flex MBA places great emphasis on continuously integrated relevant concepts and challenges that are daily introduced to the business community at large. Currently, the Flex MBA core curriculum incorporates global business concepts and analysis, cultural intelligence, organizational leadership, sustainability, crisis management resolutions, social consciousness issues, ethical decision-making, and optional business consulting projects. The core also focuses on the business value chain, and the way in which different functional areas come together to create a competitive advantage: students experience decision-making from the perspective of the company as a whole.

The Lehigh Flex MBA is a 36-credit program that can be completed at a part-time or an accelerated pace, on campus or online, or through a culmination of these methods to fit your lifestyle. The core is comprised of 21 credits; the remaining 15 credits are electives, from which a student may choose to specialize in a concentration or not.

Orientation

The Lehigh Flex MBA Orientation, scheduled for August 25th & 26th, 2017, is provided to welcome and acquaint students with information to successfully transition into graduate life at Lehigh. Orientation will include a live case study collaboration, where you will dive into a case that is designed to open your eyes and minds to the broad and complex business issues at the core of the Flex MBA. We strive toward keeping orientation fun and informative, geared toward building relationships with your new network and preparing for academia.

Prerequisites

Some basic business knowledge is necessary in order to be successful in the Flex MBA core curriculum.  Prerequisites DO NOT NEED TO BE COMPLETED prior to enrolling in the Lehigh Flex MBA.  Our program provides the flexibility that would allow you to schedule prerequisite coursework alongside your regular coursework, moving you towards faster completion.

The prerequisites for the Lehigh Flex MBA program are:

  • Financial Accounting
  • Statistics
  • Principles of Economics

*A statement of Computer Literacy is also required

The accounting prerequisite may be satisfied by enrolling in GBUS 401 Financial Accounting for Managers and Investors at Lehigh and earning a minimum grade of “C”, or by taking a proficiency exam administered by the college. Waivers are granted for the holders of the CPA license and are considered on a case by case basis for accounting undergraduate majors. The prerequisite of Financial Accounting must be completed prior to enrolling in MBA 402 Managing Financial and Physical Resources & MBA 403 Managing Information.

The statistics prerequisite may be fulfilled by having taken a course within the past 5 years and receiving a “B” or better, or by taking a proficiency exam administered through the college, or by enrolling in ECO 401 Basic Statistics for Business and Industry or equivalent with a minimum grade of “C” in a course at Lehigh or a minimum grade of “B” from a course outside of Lehigh. Students must receive advisor approval for courses that would be taken outside of Lehigh. The prerequisite of Statistics must be completed prior to enrolling in MBA 403 Managing Information.

Principles of Economics is a program requirement and may be satisfied by having taken a course during the undergraduate work and achieving a grade of at least “C”. The prerequisite may be satisfied by taking ECO 001 Principles of Economics at Lehigh or a course outside of Lehigh and achieving a grade of at least “C”. Coursework outside of Lehigh requires advisor approval.  The prerequisite of Economics must be completed prior to graduation.

Computer literacy is a program requirement. Students must be versed in word processing, presentation, spreadsheet and database software packages. Waivers are granted through transcript and resume review. Students lacking in these areas may participate in free seminars at Lehigh to achieve the waiver.

MBA Core

The 36-credit program begins with a mandatory weekend orientation and ends with a capstone course that draws upon the student's knowledge acquired during the Flex MBA core curriculum experience.  In-class teams closely resemble cross-functional corporate teams where each person has a different and valuable set of knowledge, skills and experience. By combining industry projects, high-level class discussions, case analyses, and a computer simulation competition, the Flex MBA Core exposes students to rigorous theoretical analysis while providing hands-on, simulated real world business experiences.

  • MBA 401 Introduction to the Organization & its Environment (2 cr): A Flex MBA core course designed to provide a thorough understanding of business organizations by examining strategies middle and senior managers use to create and sustain organizational competitive advantage. The course examines the organization from an overall perspective within the context of the firm's internal and external environment. The second aspect of this course deals with the ability to communicate effectively in today's business and professional environment, an essential skill for managers to effectively implement strategy. Students will learn communication models and frameworks for making persuasive presentations and creating conversations to get results that are essential to their success in business.
  • MBA 402 Managing Financial & Physical Resources (4 cr): A Flex MBA core course designed to integrate financial and managerial concepts into operations decisions. Disciplines of accounting, finance and economics are combined to provide substantive foundations for discussing and analyzing data. Implications of analysis are applied to facilitate decision-making in other areas such as marketing, operations (manufacturing, logistics and engineering), human resources, information technology and general management. The major learning objectives will be applied through a series of "living" cases that are centered on analyzing historical financial performance, preparing a business plan, and valuing a business.
    Prerequisites: (MBA 401 and GBUS 401)
  • MBA 403 Managing Information (4 cr): A Flex MBA core course dealing with concepts and methods involved in the collection, organization and dissemination of information that helps managers make operational and strategic decisions. The course also deals with attributes of information and examines enterprise-wide impacts of local decisions. Revenue, cost, time and quality-based information are accorded equal emphasis, while students are exposed to alternative evaluation methods for decisions related to different parts of the value chain. Topics include: activity-based costing; activity-based management; transaction analysis; operational and strategic decisions such as outsourcing, design partnerships, etc; investment analysis for short lifecycle investments; evaluation of uncertainty, risk and ambiguity; metrics development; compensation policies; segment evaluation methods; target costing and functional analysis; quality function deployment; total cost of ownership; and transfer pricing. In addition, the course deals with: information technology enablers which allow firms to improve value delivered to customers; and evaluation and management of emerging forms of Cooperation, such as joint ventures and project based strategic alliances.

  • MBA 404 Managing Products & Services (4 cr): A Flex MBA core course that explores how organizations manage products and services within the context of an integrated value chain.  The course focuses on how firms create value through a commitment to: (1) customer intimacy, (2) operational excellence, and (3) product and process innovation.  While exploring these topics, the student will in fact explore the environment faced by organizations and study how the effectiveness of organizations depend on their willingness to adapt to a changing environment.  The course addresses strategies for exceeding customer expectations, establishing total quality as the core foundation, developing a strong customer focus, creating value through supply chain management, developing new products for competitive advantage, matching aggregate supply with customer demand, and designing market channels and influencing customers.  As a result, students understand how the concepts and principles work under conditions of rapid technological advances, increasing globalization, and an enhanced need for cross-functional and cross-organizational integration.  Prerequisites as noted below.

  • MBA 405 Managing People (4 cr): A Flex MBA core course that examines how effective organizations are created, maintained, and improved. The course will focus on how good people are attracted to an organization and how to make them productive. Topics include: job design, staffing, training and development, performance, teams, influence, diversity, change, ethical decision-making and current people issues facing today's organizations. Prerequisites as noted below.

  • MBA 406 Integrative Experience (3 cr): A Flex MBA course where students apply the body of knowledge acquired in MBA 401 through 405 through a simulation and case discussions. This course places an emphasis on strategic management and takes the point of view of the general manager to view the organization from an overall perspective in the context of the firm's internal and external environment. In doing so, students examine historical perspectives, contemporary theories, and practical applications all in the spirit of helping them develop a broad understanding of strategic management issues and solutions. By combining high-level class discussions, case analyses, a computer simulation competition and the crosscore project this course exposes students to rigorous theoretical analysis while providing hands-on, simulated real world business experiences. Prerequisites as noted below.

Sample Schedule

Below are two sample schedules for progressing through the Lehigh Flex MBA: first, as a part-time or online student, and second, as an accelerated student. While these are sample schedules, please note that regardless of pace, students may start the Flex MBA in either the fall or spring semester as the core courses are offered in both semesters. Electives may be taken from courses of general business interest toward a specific concentration.
