The era of big data offers significant opportunities to enhance societal and firm value. However, the promise underlying this realization rests upon the dual aspect of privacy and security. Without privacy, individuals can be placed in harm’s way. Without security of an individual’s data to allow for its use, the value of data may not be realized.

The Impact Symposium will bring together privacy and security experts in a variety of big data application areas to address, to a broad audience, a number of different topics, such as:

  • What does, and doesn’t, big data know about you?
  • What is privacy in the era of big data and what should we expect from technologies?
  • How does concern for privacy impact business practices, and vice versa?
  • How can data security tools and practices protect data, and what are the limits of such technologies?
  • The future of privacy and security as we move into the era of the Internet of Things
